Dozens injured in firecracker accident in Malaysia

Apart from a man who was seriously injured, 21 other victims suffered minor burns and cuts caused by firecracker residue.

ALOR SETAR – A man was seriously injured while 21 others, including a Bangladeshi national, sustained minor injuries after firecrackers exploded in Kulim, in the Malaysian state of Kedah, in the early hours of Deepavali on Oct 20.

Kulim police chief Zulkifli Azizan said the incident occurred at about 12.45am, adding that the man suffered a 5cm laceration on his forehead due to the explosion.

“The other 21 victims suffered minor burns and cuts caused by firecracker residue, particularly on their hands,” he said.

Superintendent Zulkifli said police first received information from a patrol unit conducting a crime prevention operation from 9pm to 2am, reporting traffic congestion due to a large crowd in the area.

“The unit requested additional assistance to help with the congestion. Upon arrival, officers found a large gathering, some of whom were injured.

“The injuries were believed to have been caused by exploding firecrackers,” he said.

Two ambulances were dispatched to the scene to provide medical aid to the injured.

He said investigations revealed that the incident happened during a public fireworks display held by members of the public along the roadside.

“The situation was brought under control by police at about 1.30am, and traffic flow in the area was restored,” he added. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
