French Open Day Eight

PARIS - Highlights of the eighth day at the French Open on Sunday (times GMT):

1135 SVITOLINA STUNS PAOLINI IN EPIC COMEBACK WIN

Ukrainian 13th seed Elina Svitolina beat last years runner-up Jasmine Paolini, seeded fourth, 4-6 7-6(6) 6-1 to reach the French Open quarter-finals.

Svitolina saved three match points before taking the second-set tiebreak. She raced into a 4-0 lead in the decider, briefly wobbled as Italian Paolini got on the board, but quickly regained control to produce a commanding finish.

Earlier this year, Svitolina knocked Paolini out in the third round of the Australian Open.

1104 PAUL THROUGH TO QUARTER-FINALS

American 12th seed Tommy Paul beat Australian Alexei Popyrin 6-3 6-3 6-3 in under two hours to reach the French Open quarter-finals for the first time in his career. He is the first American male player to reach this stage of the tournament in 22 years.

Play began under partly cloudy skies with the temperature hovering around 20 degrees Celsius.

Last years runner-up, Italian Jasmine Paolini seeded fourth, takes on Ukrainian 13th seed Elina Svitolina in the womens fourth round on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Womens top seed Aryna Sabalenka and mens defending champion Carlos Alcaraz are both facing American opponents.

Four-times champion Iga Swiatek will take on Elena Rybakina later on Philippe-Chatrier.
