South Korea police disclose identity of teacher that fatally stabbed 8 year old student

SEOUL - South Korean police on March 12 revealed the identity of a teacher accused of stabbing an eight-year-old pupil to death at an elementary school in Daejeon on Feb 10.

The Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency disclosed the suspect’s name, age and photos on its website, identifying the teacher as 48-year-old Myung Jae-wan. Myung’s information will remain public until April 11.

According to the police agency, the decision was made after a deliberation committee held a day earlier, and considered the gravity of the alleged crime and views of bereaved family members. The police added that Myung did not raise any objections.

On Feb 10, she was found beside the pupil, Kim Ha-neul, with multiple stab wounds that are believed to have been self-inflicted.

Ha-neul was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead due to excessive bleeding. Myung was arrested by the authorities last week after receiving medical treatment.

Police suspect Myung planned the crime, as it was found that she had purchased the weapon beforehand at a supermarket near the school. THE KOREA HERALD/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
