Couple in Malaysia arrested twice in a week for stealing at wedding receptions

A couple in Malaysia were arrested on Feb 20 after they allegedly stole RM3,000 (S$905) from a wedding in Kelantan in 2024. The arrest comes less than a week after they were detained for a similar crime.

According to the New Straits Times (NST),the Feb 20 arrest was in relation to their theft at a wedding in Kampung Periok, located in the town of Tumpat, on Feb 22, 2024.

The husband and wife, both in their 60s, were earlier detained on Feb 16 for allegedly stealing RM2,500 from another wedding on Feb 1 in Kampung Tasek Berangan in Pasir Mas, another town in Kelantan, Bernama reported.

Regarding the latest arrest, Tumpat police chief Mohd Khairi Shafie said a man had lodged a police report in 2024 stating that a woman had posed as a guest and attended a wedding reception at his home, reported NST.

“The unidentified woman then entered his bedroom and allegedly stole his wife’s handbag,” Assistant Commissioner Mohd Khairi reportedly said.

“The handbag contained RM3,000 in cash, and the woman left the event shortly after.”

The woman has been remanded for four days, while her husband was remanded for two days.

The case is under investigation.
