By July 5, football jolted back to its usual whirl of activity. Transfer news rattled on, so did the administrative matter of fines handed out by Uefa for financial breaches to Chelsea, Aston Villa and Barcelona, among others. It was also made public that Thomas Partey, recently out of contract at Arsenal, faces charges of rape and sexual assault. Over in the United States, Fifa’s Club World Cup, largely ignored in England despite Chelsea’s presence, rolled on into its quarter-final stages.
