The father of three young children was also a Portugal international, earning his first senior cap in 2019 and making 49 appearances for the team.
His brother, 26-year-old Andre, who played for Penafiel in the Portuguese second division and travelling with him, was also killed when the car came off a road in the province of Zamora, near the border with Portugal.
