Protest votes Easy by election win in Perak masks unhappiness against Malaysia s PM Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR - Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s ally Barisan Nasional (BN) easily retained its seat in a by-election in Perak on April 26, but the ability of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) to more than double its vote share to 6 per cent should worry the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chief.
The vote surge by the tiny PSM was by far the fringe party’s best outing since ending its electoral pact with Datuk Seri Anwar’s coalition, then known as Pakatan Rakyat, after the 2013 General Election.
